These records were transcribed by Martha Prince, with corrections and amplifications by Kari Ready, Bill Stein, Jim Kearney, and Wolfram M. Von-Maszewski. The original book no longer has its cover, nor does it have a title page. It represents, however, the earliest records of the congregation of Trinity Lutheran Church in Frelsburg, Texas
When the church began its ecclesiastical activity in 1855, the clerk who recorded its first baptism thoughtfully left eleven pages blank at the front of the register for parishioners to record baptisms that had occurred before the church was established. Five of these pages were used, six remain blank. Seven early baptisms are recorded on the first page, with all of the information about them presented on that page. Thereafter, the information about each baptism is spread across two pages. The numbering system follows in kind, but only to a point. The first page is given the number 1. Beginning with the next page and continuing through at least page number 108, the book is foliated, that is, every other page is given a number. The pages which would presumably have been numbered 109 through 163 are missing (resulting in the loss of half the information for the entries on pages 108). The book resumes with page 164. The entries on it and on all the subsequent pages are reproduced on Part 2 of this posting. The numbers which we give for each baptism below are the numbers of the page on which the information begins.
Most of the records were written in the old German style of handwriting commonly known as script. Though the transcriber, Martha Prince, seems to have done a remarkable job of reading the many entries which appear, at first glance, to be indecipherable, and though most of the entries have also been rechecked by Kari Ready and Bill Stein, we are certain that these transcriptions are not perfect, and encourage researchers to verify their accuracy independently.
